Magic in the Wo/Man: Kate and Dan Jajewski

MPT veterans and married couple Kate and Dan Jajewski take on the roles of Sandra Bloom and Amos Calloway in Big Fish. We are honored that this power couple keeps returning to perform with us summer after summer!

How many shows have you performed in with Middleton Players Theatre?

Kate: This is my 20th show with MPT! My first MPT show was RENT, which was 10 years ago this summer!

Dan: This is my 22nd MPT show! My first production was Les Miserables in 2013!

What role do you play and what is your favorite part about the character?

Kate: I play Sandra Bloom. My favorite thing about Sandra is that she realizes that while all of Edward’s stories may not be factually accurate, they are an important part of who he is as a person. She loves the entirety of him, not just the parts that are convenient and clear cut.

Dan: I play Amos Calloway the circus owner. I’d say my favorite part about Amos is how funny and goofy I get to be while playing him.

What is your favorite song from Big Fish?

Kate: Daffodils

Dan: Daffodils

Big Fish revolves around a man who tells big stories about his life that seem unbelievable. What's something true from your life that sounds unbelievable?

Kate: I once danced back up for Weird Al Yankovic and I met my husband while performing for MPT!

Dan: I can tuck my hands behind my back and touch my elbows together in front of my body.

What do you like about performing with your spouse?

Dan: I love getting to share the stage with such an amazingly talented and beautiful woman. She pushes me and encourages me to be better than I ever thought I could be.

Kate: Everything! I love to have the support system, as well as the shared passion for theater to be a part of our love story. Dan and I met in 2014 rehearsing for RENT, started dating in 2016 during Jesus Christ Superstar, and got married in 2020! There’s something so comforting and wonderful about sharing this experience together in the place we met with the people we love.

What does it mean for you to be able to perform for your friends, family and community?

Kate: I love the community that is found in live theater, where the energy from the audience is truly part of the performance! It’s such an important part of the experience and it makes my heart so happy to be able to tell these stories and immediately feel the response from those around me.

Big Fish the musical will perform at the Middleton Performing Arts Center June 14-16 and June 21-23. Tickets to this show and discounted season tickets to all 3 of our summer shows can be purchased online or at the box office. Groups of 10 or more receive a 10% discount on tickets. https://www.middletonplayers.com/tickets

Magic in the Man: Keith Christianson

Keith Christianson joins us as the giant man with a giant heart in his very first production with Middleton Players Theatre!

What role do you play and what is your favorite part about that character?

I play Karl the Giant. I love a comedic bit part with some heart in it.

What is your favorite song from Big Fish?

Fight the Dragons

Big Fish revolves around a man who tells big stories about his life that seem unbelievable. What's something true from your life that sounds unbelievable?

There was a war game played all over the world. I got good enough at it that they had to change the rules. On top of that a major TV show even made a cheeky reference to me for the same reason.

What does it mean for you to be able to perform for your friends, family and community?

It's a wonderful form of therapy.

Magic in the Woman: Maddy Sylvester

We last saw Maddy on stage with MPT with a sultry puppet on her arm. This summer, as The Witch in Big Fish, she’s looking into her crystal ball to see your future… and she sees you in the audience!

What was your first show with Middleton Players Theater?

My first show with MPT was Avenue Q last year where I played Lucy.

What role do you play and what is your favorite part about that character?

I play The Witch. I love that she comes across as this powerful all knowing person, but deep down she is a misunderstood softie that truly cares about other people. She’s just one of the girls.

Big Fish revolves around a man who tells big stories about his life that seem unbelievable. What's something true from your life that sounds unbelievable?

When I was in high school I worked as a party host for a local fun center in Northwest Indiana. One day, we had security come up to the front counter and ask if we had a secret back entrance for special guests. Come to find out the special guest was Jennifer Hudson and she was there to celebrate her family member’s birthday party that I was booked for. So I served them all pizza and cupcakes and sang happy birthday to the little one. It was a cool experience that I can always use in two truths and a lie!

What is your favorite song from Big Fish?

My favorite song from Big Fish varies depending on my mood. There are so many good ones to choose! Want to cry your eyes out? What’s Next going into How it Ends or I Don’t Need a Roof. Want to feel powerful? I Know What You Want/The Witch.

What does it mean for you to be able to perform for your friends, family and community?

It truly means a lot to me that I’ve been given the opportunity to perform in Big Fish. Everyone in the cast is so incredibly talented and the story is one of my favorites! It’s so inspiring to be surrounded by cast mates, crew, and audience members so passionate about the arts. Thanks for all the support!

Magic in the Men: David and Patrick Sisson

David Sisson joins us for his first MPT production and his first time being on stage since 2005! To make his return back to stage even more special, he gets to perform with his son Patrick.

How many shows have you done with Middleton Players Theatre?

Patrick: This will be my fourth. The first was All Shook Up in 2017 where I met my fiance!

Big Fish revolves around a man who tells big stories about his life that seem unbelievable. What's something true from your life that sounds unbelievable?

David: I am a Shaman.

Patrick: I once held hands with Tina Fey!

What is your favorite song from Big Fish?

David: Fight the Dragons

Patrick: I Don’t Need a Roof

Have you ever shared the stage with your son/dad?

Patrick: Yes! My dad and I did our first show together back in 2003 when we performed in A Christmas Carol with the Children's Theater of Madison.

David: Yes, we were both in the Children's Theater of Madison's A Christmas Carol for 3 years in a row, and that was 2 decades ago! It was Patrick’s first show and he was playing Tiny Tim and they asked me to read some parts that hadn’t been cast yet at the first table read and let me know after that I would be playing those parts since I was going to be there with Patrick anyway! It was a great experience.

What do you like about performing with your son/dad?

Patrick: It has been such a joy to watch my dad push himself outside of his comfort zone in this production. His positive attitude and commitment to lifelong learning is so inspiring!

David: This story in particular hits close to my heart. I retired from my 46 year prosthetics career during the pandemic…..done fighting my dragons and my son is fully engaged in developing his own story and career, fighting his dragons.  I am entering my last third of life and to watch him and the whole cast spend hours every night for months preparing for this show with all their passion and talent  is really good for the soul.  I will remember this experience forever.

What does it mean for you to be able to perform for your friends, family and community?

Patrick: This will be my first time on stage since the pre-COVID times! I am so excited to share this beautiful story with so many friends and loved ones within the Madison theater community.

David: Scary good!  I haven’t done a show in 20 years and was worried about learning the Lines, songs , cues and dancing at 67 years old and being on stage with my son. What a gift! Thank you Middleton Players Theatre. Helping with my neuroplasticity.

Magic in the Man: Zak Wolff

After performing in several post-covid Middleton Players Theatre shows in the Blackbox Theater, Zak Wolff gets to grace the Middleton PAC stage for the first time as we go back to the main stage! Here’s a conversation we had with him about his time in MPT’s Big Fish.

How many shows have you done with Middleton Players Theatre?

I have done 5 shows with MPT.

What was the first Middleton Players Theatre show you performed in?

I played Billy in the 2022 production of Musical of Musicals: The Musical.

What role do you play and what is your favorite part about the character?

I play Will Bloom, the son of Edward Bloom who is grounded in reality. My favorite part of playing Will is his strong character arc. I love his journey of personal discovery of what family means to him and how he responds to conflict within himself and his relationships.

What is your favorite song from Big Fish the Musical

Fight the Dragons

Big Fish revolves around a man who tells big stories about his life that seem unbelievable. What’s something true from your life that sounds unbelievable?

I left China, right at the beginning of the pandemic.

What does it mean for you to perform for your friends, family and community?

It is something truly special, especially in the context of this performance of Big Fish. There are many beautiful moments that I’m excited and humbled to share with those I love. I’m most grateful to share these with my family, as we lost my grandfather to pancreatic cancer a few years ago. Much like Edward, he was a big storyteller and the joy of many family events.

Magic in the Men: Joshua and Liev Schiffman

After a busy MPT season last summer, Joshua Schiffman is back on the main stage with a very special cast mate, his son Liev!

How many shows have you been in with Middleton Players Theatre?

Joshua: This is my 6th show with MPT! The first show was Sweeney Todd back in 2018.

Liev: Just one, I was in Beauty and the Beast with my dad in 2019.

Big Fish revolves around a man who tells big stories about his life that seem unbelievable. What's something true from your life that sounds unbelievable?

Joshua: I once performed in Carnegie Hall!

Liev: I went to Iceland with my family and my soccer team, and on that trip I met the president. In the final of the tournament we were playing in, the president's son was on the opposing team, and we ended up winning.

What is your favorite song from Big Fish?

Joshua: The Witch; it's so different from anything else in the show.

Liev: Be the Hero

What do you like about performing with your son/dad?

Joshua: My son is a rising senior in high school, and really starting to figure out who he is and what he wants to do in the world.  I love that part of his path is a passion for musical theater, and that's something we can share no matter where else he goes in life.

Liev: It's really nice for him to introduce me to a lot of the cast that he's more familiar with, and that I don't really know. Alongside that, I'm able to practice with him at home and we can learn from one another. I get to share this common interest and spend time with him, having fun doing something we both love.

Magic in the Man: Sam Taylor

Sam Taylor stars in Middleton Players Theatre’s production of Big Fish. A legend in local theater here in Madison, this is Sam’s first production with MPT and we are over the moon that we snagged this big fish!

What role do you play and what is your favorite part about that character?

Edward Bloom. Edward is able to breathe life into the everyday and find the magic in the mundane. He deeply values connection with his family and friends, and he strongly believes in the power of storytelling.

What is your favorite song from Big Fish

What’s Next

What does it mean for you to be able to perform for your friends, family and community?

I always feel grateful to perform because it feels like a culmination of so many people's individual contributions to my life, from the support from family and friends, to the mentorship from so many great teachers, to the talents of my many collaborators. Nothing I do happens without their time, effort, and care!

Magic in the Woman: Natalie Miller

Last seen on the MPT stage as the new girl in town in Spitfire Grill, Natalie Miller is back on the main stage as the hometown sweetheart that never left in Big Fish!

How many Middleton Players Theatre shows have you performed in?

This is my third production with Middleton Players Theatre! My first production was Sunday in the Park with George in 2016.

What role do you play and what is your favorite part about that character?

I play the character Jenny Hill. I love that although she doesn’t ultimately end up with the man she loves, she still only speaks highly of him to his son when they meet.

What is your favorite song from Big Fish

I Don’t Need a Roof

Big Fish revolves around a man who tells big stories about his life that seem unbelievable. What's something true from your life that sounds unbelievable?

I once made my family pull over so that I could hug a wild donkey on the side of the road.

Why should someone come see Big Fish

People should come see Big Fish because it deals with so many aspects of the human experience that anyone from 9-99 years old will be able to relate to. It has the elements of a fast-paced, glitzy Broadway musical while also having characters grounded in the reality of what it means to be human. Also, the cast of local performers is incredible!

What does it mean for you to be able to perform for your friends, family and community?

It always makes me feel so grateful to realize how much support I have around me!!

Big Fish the musical will perform at the Middleton Performing Arts Center June 14-16 and June 21-23. Tickets to this show and discounted season tickets to all 3 of our summer shows can be purchased online or at the box office. Groups of 10 or more receive a 10% discount!

Jajewski on Jajewski (part 2)

Dan Jajewski graces our stage for his 21st (!!!) MPT show (and that’s a record, folks)! Keep reading to learn more about Dan and his thoughts on Sondheim on Sondheim.

What is your favorite Sondheim show/song/lyric? And why?

My favorite Sondheim song would have to be “I’ll Meet You at the Donut”… but actually it’s “Finishing the Hat.” I mean, do I need to explain? It’s fantastic!

Which Sondheim role would you love to play, but probably wouldn't be cast as?

Little Red in Into the Woods.

If you could spend one day with Stephen Sondheim, what would you do?

If I could spend a day with Stephen, I’d love to just grab a fancy dinner and listen to his stories.

If there were a biographical revue about your life (either film or stage), what would the title be? Who would you want to play you?

My biographical revue would be titled “A Life of Stuff… and Corndogs” and I’d want Ryan Reynolds to play me.

Don’t miss Dan onstage in Sondheim on Sondheim September 15-17! Tickets are on sale now at www.middletonplayers.com/tickets.

Jajewski on Jajewski (part 1)

Kate Jajewski returns for her nineteenth (!!!) MPT show, and her second this summer! Keep reading to learn more about Kate and her thoughts on Sondheim on Sondheim.

When was the last time you were on stage?

I was on stage last month in Who’s Your Baghdaddy with Music Theatre of Madison.

What is your favorite Sondheim show/song/lyric?

“Finishing the Hat” is my favorite song in the entire musical theatre canon. It’s beautiful and heartbreaking.

Which Sondheim role would you love to play, but probably wouldn't be cast as?

Bobby in Company!

If you could spend one day with Stephen Sondheim, what would you do?

Probably cry and make a fool of myself from being so star struck :)

Any funny stories about a Sondheim experience?

LMAO I’ll leave this one to my husband Dan for forgetting his lines in Sunday…

Don’t miss Kate onstage in Sondheim on Sondheim September 15-17! Tickets are on sale now at www.middletonplayers.com/tickets.

Wolff on Wolff

Zak Wolff returns for his fourth MPT show, and his third this summer! Keep reading to learn more about Zak and his thoughts on Sondheim on Sondheim.

What is your favorite Sondheim show/song/lyric? And why?

“Once the words are spoken
Something may be broken
Still, you love her
What can you lose?”

We’ve all had that person—wanting to tell them how we truly feel, but fear the consequences. It is relatable, as often I find myself stifling my emotions to avoid conflict.

Which Sondheim role would you love to play, but probably wouldn't be cast as?

Milky White. Especially the puppet from the recent revival!

If there were a biographical revue about your life (either film or stage), what would the title be? Who would you want to play you?

“ProZak: Holding It Together.” I would want Jack Quaid to play me. He’s great at towing the line between timid yet heroic.

Don’t miss Zak onstage in Sondheim on Sondheim September 15-17! Tickets are on sale now at www.middletonplayers.com/tickets.

Siewert on Siewert

MPT veteran Ashton Siewert returns to the stage this fall! Keep reading to learn more about Ashton and her thoughts on Sondheim on Sondheim.

What brought you to the Madison area?

I grew up in Madison, and just returned after 3 years in Florida. I was very lucky that a wild year with my job led to an opportunity to return home and be closer to family and friends.

What is your favorite Sondheim show/song/lyric?

My favorite Sondheim song is probably “I Remember” from Evening Primrose (sadly not featured in this show). The lyrics are filled with vivid similes that paint a sensory-filled picture almost everyone can connect with. Nearly every phrase evokes nostalgia. Give it a listen! It's one of Sondheim's more hummable works.

Which Sondheim role would you love to play, but probably wouldn't be cast as?

It's a tie between Georges Seurat (George in Sunday in the Park with George), and Sweeney Todd. Although very different characters, George has some of the most beautiful passages in Sondheim’s oeuvre, and Sweeney is just a deeply troubled character with lots of dark humour and fun, dramatic moments. I will probably never get to play those roles, but I get a few measures in this show to express my inner Demon Barber of Fleet Street!

If you could spend one day with Stephen Sondheim, what would you do?

Before his passing, I would have loved a vocal coaching session, of course. Outside of theatre, I think a day at Epcot (Disney World) with Stephen Sondheim would have been great!

Don’t miss Ashton onstage in Sondheim on Sondheim September 15-17! Tickets are on sale now at www.middletonplayers.com/tickets.

Stecker on Stecker

Having worked backstage on our production team this summer and last, Meghan Stecker is ready to perform on stage this fall! Keep reading to learn more about Meghan and their thoughts on Sondheim on Sondheim.

When was the last time you were on stage?

I was last on the stage in 2019 for my undergraduate senior recital, which I performed with MPT’s own Thomas Kasdorf. Funnily enough, I sang several songs featured in Sondheim on Sondheim for my recital and it feels like a full circle moment to be coaching with Thomas again, 4 years later, on the same piece. I couldn’t have picked a more exciting show for my first production since MPT’s Parade

What is your favorite Sondheim show/song/lyric?

My favorite Sondheim show is a tie between Sweeney Todd, Assassins, Passion, and Sunday in the Park with George. I probably listen to one of these shows in its entirety approximately once a week; it’s like my comfort food.

Which Sondheim role would you love to play, but probably wouldn't be cast as?

A dream role that I will probably never play is Sweeney Todd. I’ve wanted to play Sweeney since my junior year of high school and even sang My Friends for my high school’s senior recital.

Don’t miss Meghan onstage in Sondheim on Sondheim September 15-17! Tickets are on sale now at www.middletonplayers.com/tickets.

Schiffman on Schiffman

We just saw Joshua Schiffman on stage as Trekkie Monster, and this fall he graces the MPT stage for the fifth time in Sondheim on Sondheim. Keep reading to learn more about Joshua!

What brought you to the Madison area?

My wife and I were both in grad school at the same time doing the long-distance thing, me in Buffalo, NY, and her here at UW.  I finished first, so I moved here.

What is your favorite Sondheim show/song/lyric?

My favorite show is Sweeney Todd. My favorite lyric, however, is probably from Sunday in the Park: "I chose, and my world was shaken - so what?  The choice may have been mistaken, the choosing was not."  As someone prone to beating himself up when things don't turn out as I might have hoped, I take this lyric as a reminder that at the moment we make a choice, it can be the right thing to do, even if it doesn't work out in the end.

If you could spend one day with Stephen Sondheim, what would you do?

I would love first to solve a crossword puzzle with him, and then construct one with him.  I enjoy crosswords, and I know he did, too, but more than that I think it would be a really interesting way to see his mind in action.

Any funny stories about a Sondheim experience?

I played keyboards for ...Forum while in highschool.  Twice, actually. One was a community theater production done in the round, with the band just off to the side.  For fun, all of us in the band chose to wear togas and bow ties.

If there were a biographical revue about your life (either film or stage), what would the title be? Who would you want to play you?

I think I'd call it, "That Reminds Me..." because it's just about impossible for me to get through a conversation without hearing something that reminds me of a song lyric, and all too often I'll just start singing the song. (My friends and family are very patient!) As for who should play me, I'll say Jessie Tyler Ferguson; he has a lovely voice for all those songs in my head, plus he does bear a certain resemblance.

Don’t miss Joshua onstage in Sondheim on Sondheim September 15-17! Tickets are on sale now at www.middletonplayers.com/tickets.

Kasinski on Kasinski

Jessica Kasinski is back for her sixth MPT show! Keep reading to learn more about Jessica and her thoughts on Sondheim on Sondheim.

When was the last time you were on stage?

In May at the Bartell Theater.

What is your favorite Sondheim show/song/lyric?

Follies is quickly becoming my favorite Sondheim show. The character development is just fascinating to me.

Which Sondheim role would you love to play, but probably wouldn't be cast as?

Sweeney Todd.

If there were a biographical revue about your life (either film or stage), what would the title be? Who would you want to play you?

The title of my biopic would be “Be Better” and I’d want Emma Thompson to play the older me looking back and kindly telling people to simply be better.

Don’t miss Jessica onstage in Sondheim on Sondheim September 15-17! Tickets are on sale now at www.middletonplayers.com/tickets.

Bass on Bass

After a long four years, Trevor Bass finally returns to our stage for his sixteenth (!!!) MPT show! Keep reading to learn more about Trevor and his thoughts on Sondheim on Sondheim.

What brought you to the Madison area?

I was born and raised in the Madison area. After I went to college in Eau Claire, work brought me back home, and now I live here with my wonderful wife Mari and our two incredible daughters, Alice and Penny.

What is your favorite Sondheim show/song/lyric?

Sunday in the Park With George will always hold a dear place in my heart. In particular, the lyrics in “Move On,” and the composition of “Sunday - Act 1 Finale.”

If you could spend one day with Stephen Sondheim, what would you do?

In NYC - meet for a nice brunch, catch a matinee, fancy dinner, see an evening show, and talk about life, music, and art throughout.

If there were a biographical revue about your life (either film or stage), what would the title be? Who would you want to play you?

I would call it “Don’t Worry, Nobody ACTUALLY Knows What They’re Doing” and I’d obviously be played by Chris Hemsworth, because we look exactly alike.

Don’t miss Trevor onstage in Sondheim on Sondheim September 15-17! Tickets are on sale now at www.middletonplayers.com/tickets.

It Sucks to be Noah Fahey

Noah Fahey joins us for his first MPT production! He plays Newcomer and Box, and understudies the roles of Nicky and Bad Idea Bear in this summer’s Avenue Q!

How many MPT shows have you been a part of?

This is my first one and I am super grateful to be part of such an amazingly talented cast!

What has your experience been working with the puppets?

Oh dear, let’s just say it has been a fun challenge! Puppetry is an art form and it requires so much more thought & effort than one would normally assume. I most enjoyed watching the cast bring such life & personality to our puppets over the last few weeks in rehearsals.

What is your favorite line/song/moment from the show?

My all time favorite line from this show is when Nicky attempts to cover up his revelation about Rod by saying that Rod has an “undescended testicle.”

What are the top 3 songs you’d put on a mix tape?

“Fast Car” by Tracy Chapman, “Morning in America” by Jon Bellion, and “I Guess That’s Why They Call It the Blues” by Elton John.

Why does it suck to be you?

I am dairy intolerant and live in Wisconsin, surrounded by cheese!

Don’t miss Noah onstage in Avenue Q August 4-13! Tickets are on sale now at www.middletonplayers.com/tickets.
