The Movers and the Shapers: Isabel Celata

Last summer, Isabel portrayed Shelby in Steel Magnolias. This summer she returns to Middleton Players Theatre as Beth Spencer in Merrily We Roll Along - another romantic, loyal, and principled woman.

Merrily We Roll Along moves back through the memories of three friends. What do you hope the audience will remember from this production?

I hope the audience will reflect on the relationships that have made them the person they are today. Every person who comes into our lives, whether they are there for a short or long time, leaves a mark on us. This show has made me think about all of the people who have impacted me - those who are still actively present in my life and those whose paths have diverged from mine. It reminds you to cherish those who have stayed around and to reflect fondly on the memories of those who, for one reason or another, haven't.

What makes having OLD friends so meaningful?

There is something so special about not having to explain yourself to someone. Old friends know every version of the person you've been and how your past makes you who you are. My closest old friend has been in my life for ten years and often remembers more about me than I do! She helps me to know myself better and more truly.

What’s the best thing about making NEW friends?

Making new friends expands your horizons and allows you to learn more about the world around you!

What’s your favorite line or lyric from Merrily We Roll Along? Why?

"Musicals are popular. They're a great way to state important ideas. Ideas that could make a difference. Charley, we can change the world."

That's exactly how I feel about musical theatre. This genre gives us the change to really say something and make a difference in the world around us. What a privilege!

As you’ve been rehearsing this story about creative people, how have you reflected on your own creative process?

I feel somewhat like I am at a similar place to young Frank, Charley, and Mary. I actually graduate with my Doctorate of Musical Arts in Vocal Performance on the opening night of Merrily. I'm right at the precipice of big changes in my life, which is scary but exciting. I'm looking forward to getting out into the world and, hopefully, doing something that matters.

Charley, Frank, and Mary all have big dreams. What was your big dream when you were younger?

I planned to be the President of the United States. And a doctor, lawyer, ballerina, teacher, singer, and a million other things. But mostly the President of the United States.

What is your big dream now?

My dream is to make a difference in others lives through performance and teaching. I hope every day that my choice of career helps others to be true to themselves, kind to others, and to feel empowered to make a difference in our world.
